Christine Quinn Wins Stonewall Democratic Club Backing in a Landslide Vote
The Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City, the city’s leading LGBT party organization, will back City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for Mayor of New York City. The Speaker won the club’s endorsement in a landslide victory Wednesday evening, capturing 80% of the vote.
The city’s oldest LGBT Democratic organization joins a growing list of supportive LGBT groups, including the Empire State Pride Agenda’s Political Action Committee, The Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and a host of elected officials, including Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, State Senator Brad Hoylman.
“There’s no question that Speaker Quinn’s candidacy is a historic opportunity for New York City, but more important is her unmatched record of delivering for all New Yorkers,” said Stonewall Democratic Club President Melissa Sklarz. “From fighting bullying and bias crimes citywide, to leading the successful charge for marriage equality in New York State, she has stood with our community in every hard-fought battle. We will urge New Yorkers to stand with her as the next mayor.
“The Stonewall Democratic Club is synonymous with the struggle for equality. In the wake of several horrific crimes against members of the LGBT community, we are all reminded of how critical their work continues to be. It is an honor to have their support,” said Speaker Quinn. “I will continue to work day in and day out to ensure that every New Yorker – regardless of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation – is treated fairly. The LGBT community will have no greater ally in Gracie Mansion.”
Founded in 1986, the Stonewall Democratic Club is the oldest citywide Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Democratic organization in New York. The organization is named in honor of the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969, a pivotal moment in the modern gay rights movement. The organization continues to fight for equality by mobilizing the LGBT community to support fair-minded Democrats.
